Religions on Reunion Island: a spiritual melting pot
Réunion is a true crossroads of cultures, and this is reflected in the religious diversity that characterizes the island. Here, several beliefs coexist harmoniously, bearing witness to a rich spiritual heritage forged over the centuries by waves of migration.
Catholicism, introduced by the French colonists, remains the dominant religion. Churches, scattered across the island, are major gathering places, with religious festivals such as Christmas and Easter setting the pace for local life.
However, other religions also play an important role. Hinduism, brought by Indian indentured servicemen after the abolition of slavery, is fervently celebrated on festivals such as Dipavali and Cavadee. Hindu temples, with their bright colors and ceremonies, are an integral part of the Reunionese landscape.
Islam, introduced by Gujarati traders, is also well represented. Mosques can be found in many of the island's towns, and celebrations such as Eid al-Fitr bring together a large Muslim community.
Finally, Buddhism and other Asian beliefs, brought by the Chinese community, as well as Malagasy ancestor worship, further enrich this unique religious diversity.
On La Réunion, this peaceful coexistence of religions symbolizes a mutual respect and tolerance rooted in the very soul of the island, creating a fascinating spiritual mosaic to discover.
